This is the first installment from the multi-million seller who brought us Harry Bosch and Renée Ballard. In Nightshade, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective Stillwell is in exile. The tenacious and testy detective gets banished to tiny Catalina Island (yes, a real place) off the coast of Southern California. It’s a “get out of our hair” assignment.
So Stillwell (“just call me Still”) is deported to this island for misfit toys. It’s a sleepy assignment until the weekends, when the boats arrive, the beer flows, and the biggest challenge is quelling disorderly conduct . . . that is until they found the body; a young woman wrapped in bag, and anchored to the sea floor. What follows will challenge Still’s keen insight and bring him face-to-face with his troublesome past and present enemies.
Great story. Great characters. Great narration (if you listen to the audible). If you like Harry Bosch and Renée Ballard, I think you’re going to find Nightshade a delightful page turner!
