By Doris Kearns Goodwin
Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin applies her historical skills to the life she shared with Richard Goodwin for forty-five years. Combing through boxes of Dick Goodwin’s memories, together they recount the history of the 1960s.
If you have read previous works of Doris Kearns Goodwin (see below), like them, this book does not disappoint.
Leadership In Turbulent Times
Team of Rivals
The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism
Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream
Wait Till Next Year: A Memoir
No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II (Pulitzer Prize Winner)
The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys: An American Saga
I have a deep appreciation for history, those who chronicle it, and those who write about it. The difference here, is that both Kearns Goodwin and her husband lived this slice of history; the former working for Johnson, the latter for John F. Kennedy, LBJ, and Bobby Kennedy.
An Unfinished Love Story allows the reader to unpack the boxes of Dick Goodwin’s memorabilia, and delight in the remembrances, lessons, and occasional sparing of two individuals with a deep love for one another, the leaders they served, and the democracy they cherish.
Buy the book and you’ll get a history lesson, but you will get much more that that. For my part, it is always a plus to see enduring love between husband and wife, people and ideals, and the country that makes both a little easier.
